My brother has just started this project:

Trying to turn that into this:

Its an Allison engine from a WW2 Kittyhawk fighter. He found it at a deceased estate sale, and got it for nothing. What the old bugga was doing with an engine this big under his house in a little country town, I don't know. The things' truly a beast, 26 Ltr V12 and something like 1200 Hp. To even get the thing to turn over will require 30 litres of 130 octane fuel, a stack of truck batteries and a fire-extinguisher. He's a bit of a warbird nut and plans on RESTORING it. Considering he doesn't know diddly squat about aircraft engines I think it might take a while. He's had a couple of people look at it and they seem to think it could be done!!!

Anyone know anyone whose got bits of an Allison V1710? Anyone know anyone whose ever restored old engines? Long shot I know.....

my old man is restoring an engine from a 1921 ansaldo car that spent 30 yrs in a tasmanian river...it took 6 weeks of soaking it just to get the crank and pistons out...

as for myself i build my own engines for my cars, but they aren't that big or that old...

as for parts i reckon darwin could be a good place to start lookin,

Check out the Block. Its got some rot in it. Talking to him again he seems to think that it will never be airworthy, but probably able to run again one day. Then he might add it to a small truck to make some kind of super hill climber.

With a flat bed truck and a lot of muscle. I'm glad I wasn't ringed in to doing it. He pulled it to bits first. All he needs now is the rest of a kittyhawk and away he goes.

Get in contact with the AWM. I'm pretty sure they have a list of people in Aus who restore WWII aircraft.

I checked out the australian war memorial, didn't find a whole lot on warbird restoring but found an awesome link to the department of public records.

If you have any relatives who served this is the place to find them. A lot of peoples files have been digitaly photographed and are viewable. Its a little sad actually. I looked up a relative who was a pilot in ww2. I could see his whole file, from his enlistment sheet, training and operational logbooks, and the final telegram sent to his mum after he went missing in France.
Or even do a plain search under "court martial" and ther're is a lot of great yarns. Look up Clive Cauldwell and court martial - great story.

Fantastic find infact, managed to track down my grand-father's uncle who served in Gallipoli, France and in WW2. I've requested a copy of it so that my grandfather can see it, he's got an intrest in geneology

I can stop digging around in there. Had to do some ringing around to find out peoples full names and such, but its worth the effort. Also just searching general terms like "casualties" and you get to see actual combat reports of losses. The whole thing is rather sobering, as they stated things so direct and deadpan.

Might start a new thread so others can see.

That's because it's spelt "Caldwell".
