View Full Version : Your Control Layouts

A huge part of this game is setting up your controls to perfectly suit your playstyle. Do you have a layout that you bring to all First-Person Shooters, or do you re-learn with each new game? Is Default good enough for you?
Post your layouts, and throw around some ideas. I'll start with mine:
WASD, Q, E, R, Tab, CapsLock, Shift, Control, C, Space - All Default
Weapon Keys (on keyboard) - All Default
F - TeamSpeak key
V - VOIP Key
B, H - Commander Channel
X - Pop Smoke, Night Vision (Weapon 7), Tank Zoom
Z - Parachute
Windows Key - Map Zoom Level
Left Alt - View Map (without cursor, can still look and shoot)
Right Alt - Toggle 3D Map

This mouse layout spawned about halfway through my Vanilla BF2 campaign. I love how buttons can multifunction depending what vehicle you are - or aren't - in. Having the mouse thumb button and scrollwheel as vehicle position buttons was a holdover from when I used to practice solo choppering (Flying a vBF2 attack chopper by one's self, quickly switching to Gunner seat, TV Missile View, firing a shot then resuming piloting) and transfers very well to PR's solo armouring.
Having Weapon 6 and Prone next to each other means I can simply mash my thumb over those two buttons and be prone with my defribs out next to a critical teammate.
Field Dressing was originally bound to Gas Mask from vBF2 Special Forces, and I only recently discovered they used the same key. So that was easy. It's extremely useful having field dressings closeby. The pickup kit key was also there from Special Forces, as I had to retrieve my Zip Lines and Grappling hooks with ease, and it eventually stuck.
Those of you who've watched the PRM Diary movies will notice I play with my map up a lot. Alt, Windows and Caps Lock are how I do it. I'm constantly checking my map every spare moment I get, clicking on dots and names to see who's who, and I like having my minimap zoomed as far out as possible whenever I can (auto zoom always brings it back to mid-level).
The basic theory behind this setup is that my left hand controls movement whilst my right hand controls head and whatever my character is holding - be that a gun, health bag or binocs. And I've done my best to set it up so that I never need to move my hands off their natural WASD position.

I use a merc zboard. It rocks. I've changed every button from default, but everything i need is right there. The only problem i run into is voice channels. in game VOIP is depress mouse scroll wheel, but commander chat and TS and xfire chat all do get a bit confusing.

I've got the standard setup with only a few alterations,
Everything is default except my parachute key "f" and my viop button is the scroll button on the mouse....
oh yeah my 3D map button is the "3/PgDn" so I never accidentally hit it and can't see claymores and mines.
(comes from vbf2 days)
I've got a logitech G15 keyboard but since I don't play vbf2 anymore I don't use the "G" keys.
I only used to use it for solo choppering (switching between seats)
and look-back and flyby views for the jets to help out with dropping bombs on targets.
(NOT THAT BUNNYHOPPING CRAP THAT SOME USE IT FOR)
But you've got me thinking now and I might have a look into it.
(not the bunny-hopping, the go prone and bring up defibs and stuff)
@Photo, Wow...I need to get on of those mousesesssees, that looks great.
@Aphex, That is the most revolting keyboard I have ever seen,
Give it a clean will you :P
What action is assigned to that "PWN" key anyway?

I run nearly completely standard, however I run the a configure file from ver 1.0 because of the patches breaking how It will let me setup some keys.
The only thing I change on the keyboard, for some reason battlefield ver 1.0 will let me have shift as duck but any patch there after gives me that 'conflicting' key error crud.
Shift - Duck
Ctrl - Run
As for my mouse I run a Mx518 basically the same as Photoshop's but I only use the 2 side buttons and push down the scroll wheel.
Button - 3 Teamspeak
Button - 4 Commander VOIP
Button - 5 Squad VOIP
Other than that every key is the same I fly with a keyboard so I use B when I'm using mic in any aircraft try not to tends to get use killed.

I agree with photshop, key set up is very important. Most of my custimzation has come through each series of BF games, I think BFV had the best, which they changed for BF2 which pissed me off and forced me to custom through editing the .con file in wordpad. Mine are:
WASD, E, Tab, CapsLock, X, Space, N, M - All Default
Weapon Keys (on keyboard) - All Default but never use
B - TeamSpeak key
Ctrl - VOIP Key
Lft Alt - Commander Channel
T - Parachute (not heaps sure what all the defaults are any more.)
Q - Prone
F - Pick up kit
Z - Secondary Radio Commands
R - Radio Commands
Shift - Crouch
I can't duck in vehicles now because I somehow changed the setting and haven't bother to try and fix it.
Mouse, Default left and right, and scroll (but wanted to custom like i could in BFV where I could scroll up for Pistol and scroll down for Machine gun, so valuable when run out of bullets to change so quickly to a fully loaded pistol to take down the few remaining guys, tried so hard to get it to work in BF2 but I think doesnt matter so much in PR, never use pistol, well very rarely).
Thumb Button - Reload
Scroll button - Switch between single, burst and auto fire modes, so handy, the best customization I did for BF2 and changed me level of offensive power, especially with scoped auto machine guns, due to the fact I always used medic with L85 in vanilla.
95% of the time I have mini map on highest zoomed in level, have voices set to english (only problem is u don't get the drop on enemy when u hear a different language), I tired other way but more valuable when an enemy is spotted and confirmed I bring up my Caps Lock map screen and see where the troop has been spotted, if they are in mini map at zoomed in level I can usually get the drop on them by setting up an ambush or set up a flanking manuver.
UAV in vanilla were so good for this, you plan out a raid on a flag and u know where 5-6 guys are and the direction they are moving and clear the flag by yourself no worries at all. Being commander and setting up arty and UAV in front of you before every flag u hit is a reciepe for ownage.
Last night played Operation Ghost Train as Commander, defending Trenches by myself and using the satelite zoom on the area around that flag. Look at satelite footage, locate enemy and ambush or flank, check satelite and continue to do this for every kill, held off continued attack for so long by myself...was so much fun and then things got out of hand with a full squads continued attack and lost the flag for ages.
Sound is very very very important, Effects volume as loud as u can handle without making your ears bleed when u fire your own gun, get the crap scared out of me when someone opens up with the SAW, or arty drops on your head or an A-10 does a low fly-by. All other sounds as low as possible. Main reason for this is footsteps, I love surround sound, and gun fire, Lying still in long grass or behind walls in city maps and you can hear the enemy coming and moving and allows you to set up an ambush. If you dont need to run, don't, crouched movement is silent and stealth is so important.
Sorry for the extra info, probably needs to be posted somewhere else.....

Hey Photoshop, nice set-up, it make a lot of sense. But where is prone? or is "Z" prone and parachute.
Personally I like to have Weapon three (Rifle) bound to a thumb button on the mouse, this way you can always get back to rifle without lifting either hand away from movement controls or trigger control, it is also good for street fighting I can change from single to auto/burst very quickly.
I don't use the cycle weapon key, as it's annoying and takes too long. I also use some macros for menial tasks like creating a squad, rage quitting and alt+tabbing. :P
I used to have this for PR but found it to be more hassle than it's worth, mainly because i actually use the scroll wheel to selct wepons in PR, something I didn't do in nilla.
Mouse wheel up for pistol in nilla is great IMO

I'm a little bit of a traditionalist here, I like my voice settings to be faction specific. I've been playing BF2 long enough to recognise each faction's call for a medic or ammo, and anyway, it shows up on the minimap too.
I tried having my voice settings set on english, but it didn't do it for me. I like playing Project Reality.
Oh, I also have my reload set to manual...boy, there were some problems at the start! "Click Click, why the hell am I not shooting? Oh..."

I tend to reload my rifle after shooting between 5-15 bullets, rarely run out on a clip unless am over powered which I would tend to die anyway, or just grab dead guys kit and hope he had bullets left. So good when this goes right, no reload need adds hugely to killing power.
I agree with having the voices in their factional langauge, but i dont speak chinese or arabic and struggle to pick up on the calls, probably could but I'm lazy and use memory for other more important things.....can't think of what they are.

BF2 actually has a "Create A Squad" key. I think It's either Home or End.

I use a stock keyboard and an MS optical mouse. I didn't even know those keyboards and mouse hotrods existed before seeing this thread. I use the standard BF2 keymap.

Same mouse except wireless.
The larger of the two thumb buttons is set for 'primary radio commands' and the smaller one is for my 'secondary radio commands'
The mouse wheel click is set to 'weapon 4' which in most kits is a frag grenade/something explosive.
Everything else is default.

Hahah, I had a Nelson and Twombly moment (from Black Hawk Down) on Al Fallujah, where the SL opened up with his M249 suddenly and my vision ended up blurry and sound system blasting my ears to bits 8)

I use space for crouch in all FPS games. I find it the most important key re-assignment because I am a crouch whore I guess, every time I stop I instinctivly crouch and you can hold space with your thumb without loosing any dexterity for WSAD, We need more crouching in PR!!! lol. Also having VOIP transmit as one of my mouse buttons is very useful so that you don't get killed trying to reach the transmit button.

Everything is default for me, except parachute is F (though its never used in PR), and taking screenshots is middle click (because when something screenshot worth happens, its too slow to reach over and press print screen). Also Y is my teamspeak button. Don't use the mouse for comms, because I fly with keyboard only, and yeah, you need comms when flying.
