View Full Version : Embarassing moments with real weapons.

The first time I fired a scoped weapon was out Roo shooting in bush/farmland, on the back of a ute. With much kindness, I was not instructed that the scope should be kept (and works better) a little distance from the eye socket. A couple of inches.

I almost fractured my eye socket. Oucha !

Only did it once, though, and despite my nascent black eye I discovered that it is a simple thing to kill an animal with a rifle, too simple... from 100+ meters... and as a semi-confirmed pseudo-Buddhist Zen luvr... I was surprised how detached one feels from target/kill with a weapon like this...
so very different to a knife or spear or whatever, I imagine....

Ah yes I'm familiar with that phenomenon. We call it 'Steyr Eye', although the Austeyr has back-up iron sights on top of the scope that tend to lacerate the eyebrow rather than cause fractures.

I've been pretty lucky so far with my (relatively limited) dealings with weapons. I did however see someone who should know a lot better say something to the effect of 'Oh don't be such a baby. It's not loaded... Watch' before he turned, aimed the weapon high and pulled the trigger. Of course, there was a round in the chamber that he was unaware of.

Red faces and cries of 'You f***stick!!!' all round :P

Edit: Oh oh oh I did do something silly. There was a photo taken of me drinking a beer on ANZAC day with an Austeyr slung over my shoulder. Luckily I managed to get hold of the film and destroy it

The most embarrassing moment (not for me) was for the supervising sergeant at my year 10 cadet camp. We were at the range, prone with our steyrs zeroing our weapons, if I remember correctly. This was the first or second time I had fired a gun and knowing this, the sergeant and me made a bet. The bet was that if I could land my rounds within the ~5cm circle he would do 20 pushups and if I didn't then I would have to do them. Well I landed my rounds within a 3 cm radius and was quite chuffed until I saw the country boy's target next door which had 1 hole which each round had passed through. Anyway this sergeant did the pushups then and there on the range in front of everyone :D.

Same happened to me with a Styer. Was a family "open day" at Kapooka. The kind soldier lieing next to me showed me where to put my hands and told me to look through the scope. I couldn't figure out why he smiled so smuggly when I asked him, "Like this"?

Thankfully I wasn't pressing my eye up against it and was far enough away to not get anything other than a very rude shock.

Shortly after that, a bullet somehow managed to jump over the top of the guy on my left and burn the inside of my right hand. I still have the scar :(

Never had a mishap with one.

Haven't fired all that many though.

Though I have fired a glock, Colt 45, your standard 22's and 223's etc. Also a .32 (or 33?) "bank gun" or was it tellers gun?

mm I <3 the M1911. It might have a small mag and have a big recoil but I think it's the most stylish pistol around.

I got to fire one when I was in Thailand, and managed to do quite well. I was wondering what all the range staff were laughing and pointing at, until I finished my shoot and saw my mate firing one - 21 rounds and not one round on a 1x1m target 15m away!

Edited for clarity.

For Security reasons. We went to the local Police academy to learn how to handle different weapons and use them. From crossbows to AK-47, revolvers, shotguns rifles from Vietnam. Pretty much every illegal gun you could think of with the M16. In a single room. While practicing a revolver and how to load one. The casing fell out with all the dummy cartridges all on the floor. It was hilarious, to say the least.

Heh, with my cadet unit we went small-bore and large-bore rifle shooting, always with either the .22 or .303 rounds (the latter on the enfields). What was great was that every shooting detail had to have a turn going onto target detail, which meant being on the recieving end of the range. Needless to say the first few minutes scared the bejebus out of first timers, with some in the foetal position after the first volley

Other than that, I went revolver, M1911a1, Ruger .22 and glock shooting up in Queensland.

Fallen.

There may or may not exist video of me behind a bar in a suit mixing cocktails ratfaced with a steyr slung over my back ?

Oh deary, deary me....

I recall one time at an indoor range in NSW when I was demonstrating fast pistol techniques to the NSW police. I was all dolled up in my black go-fast gear covered in sponsors logo's and armed with a custom built Para Ordnance in .40cal slung low in a Safariland speed holster.

I was feeling about 12 feet tall after being introduced as this "expert" who could show these guys a few things and let me tell you, there is no way my head could have fit through that door!

Well, I turned and executed a fast draw and promptly fired a shot into the concrete about 1" in front of my right toe. I just stared at the hole in the concrete for about 30 seconds before unloading, re-holstering and walking away.

What was that saying about pride cometh before the fall?!!!!

Kinda embarrassing moment for me was the first time I went out shooting, me and my sis had a bet on as to who could hit the target the most times, well with my first five shots I missed, but then realized that I couldn't aim the dam thing properly coz I have very weak right eye.

I switched over to my left and started hitting the target , but it was too late, I had lost a shooting competition to my little sister.

I'm studying a bachelor of science in Aviation. It was a security unit. We got taught how to build bombs. How to identify them and what materials you need to take down a plane and how to prevent such. You could take down a Boeing 747 with $20 worth of materials. But thats a need to know basis...

RE: security organisations... Australia has more than one and lets be realistic about it - although this is a game, all the words we use online on VOIP and type in-game and in the forums will trigger a gazillion switches on Echelon...

Firefighters are sometimes firebugs. People who play violent tactical wargames may inevitably sometimes be gun-wielding-sociopaths/terrorists.

And on that uber-happy note... I wasn't playing last night because I was watching "Bowling for Columbine" on the TV... first time I saw it...

Smile... you're on Candid Camera *ker-click*

Half of my Cadet company got Styer eye a few years back. I was lucky, I wear glasses so my head was way back because of the refraction. It was pretty funny actually, our CSM went off his rocker.

The glasses were good to; apparently I got more magnification than anyone else, and I got the platoon award.

Yeah - 5 years ago mentioning Echelon on a public forum could have got you a quiet visit from some gentlemen with lots of questions. Now it is mainstream - I was watching the new Bourne movie last night and they talk about it in that for crying out loud! They show how the GSM keyword intercepts work (well, they show a movie version of it anyway...)

It's not hard to find out that stuff. The Anarchy Cookbook was fun to play with as a kid. I made a missle out of a model rocket, all I had to figure out was the detonator which was done with strike anywhere match heads in the tip, a lot of them.

I honestly didn't think it would work and much to my surprise I blew siding off the side of a house. Needless to say I didn't stick around to clean up my launch equipment.

.

Personaly I prefer open sights, I get a more acurate shot & is alot safer, especially if your shooting with some moron who likes to move forward of the shooter... with a scope most tend to close the other eye...

Night shoot at Mt Majura....

Flare goes up... see the targets approx 100m in front... happily firing away..... SL taps me on the shoulder and yells in my ears that I'm shooting the ground 5m in front of me...

bah...

if you think that's bad..... that's not my most embarrassing moment whilst a chocko.... but didn't involve a weapon so didn't initally share that....

K89... was a good time to be a chocko - got to play with all sorts of toys which we never had the opportunity to usually use.... that's when I was first issued cammos...but that's another story (you don't get the nickname noddy for a good reason :D ).... anyhow I digress...

K89.. picket duty somewhere on a hill near Wyndham... first time we used IR binos.... see what we thought enemy approaching but they weren't really moving... so we watch patiently for about 5 mins... about to wake the SL...and the guy I was with started waving at these 'enemy'... they wave back...mmm that's funny... turns out the light on the radio beacon on the hill we were on was throwing enough light to create a reflection or shadow of us which we could see through the bino....

People of this country stand easy and sleep better knowing I am no longer affiliated with the armed forces in any capacity :D

I got slide bite from a supposedly "customized .22" , don't ask me how.

It's embarassing because i can't appear all manly and say i got slide bite from a fricking hand cannon instead of a little .22 short.

EDIT : and also , How did you guys manage to think it was all good to fire after putting your sights right up against your eye? In my experience it ruins the sight picture and you can't really see ****.

EDIT : and also , How did you guys manage to think it was all good to fire after putting your sights right up against your eye? In my experience it ruins the sight picture and you can't really see ****. I dunno about iron sights but it's VERY common in first time weapon handlers with the Austeyr's 1.5 scope. I think people see actors firing blanks in movies with their eyes right up against the scope in movies and think that it's the way to go...

Watching a left handed shooter try to operate a right handed weapon is also pretty funny. The (very hot) spent casing is ejected at an angle that almost guarantees it will end up inside the firers clothing if fired from the prone position.

CDN-SMOKEJUMPER
3rd September 2007, 08:56 AM
Doesn't the Steyr have a casing deflector like the M-16 has?

NavyMedic85
3rd September 2007, 06:45 PM
It probably does. *shrug* I'm a medic. What do I know about weapons? haha
I've seen the casings get ejected into the clothing of 'lefties' twice though when using right handed weapons, so if they do have a casing deflector it cant be all that fantastic. I haven't seen it happen from anything other than prone position though.
