What is good to get what is free and what do you really need guys I wanna know what I should run to reasonably protect my system without compromising game play or general day to day functions.

I normally only run AVG for anti virus and I'm not overly tough on spyware although after this little stint I have had enough.

I was using Avast before that's free and works fine without intefering in games and stuff. I'm using NOD32 now though.

AVG is good or Avast, both are really the same. For spyware i use Windows Defender(Used to be called Gaint AntiSpyware before MS bought out the company and changed the name,ui ect....still the best antispyware program imo)

Also a firewall would be good. The stock XP SP2 firewall is good, you can also use your modems NAT.

I use NOD32, Windows Defender and the Windows SP2 Firewall + Modem NAT and ive been virus free since using the above combo(About 4 years now :D )

Spybot(search and destroy),is free and updated regularly.....

I've always used avg for anti virus(for same reasons..as SB)

I use ZoneAlarm AV suite, mainly because I have a lot of personal and work stuff on my PC that I am careful with. Kids PCs have free AVG and AVG AntiSpyware.
I found that since I put a good router in that I pretty much don't get any attacks these days - used to get heaps trying before, from all kinds of interesting places (Estonia...). I have also got my PC pretty much locked down so people can't install stuff. All accounts but mine are limited (XP Pro). Keeping my son under control has made me learn a bit about securing things (still have to do the odd check to see whether he has added himself back in as an admin - only 12 years old so far!

firewall = zonealarm (free)

anti-virus = AVG (free)

anti-spyware = AVG (free)

never had any problems whatsoever while using these three programs together = highly recommended

;)

and to think i used to pay mcafee $80 a year just for anti-virus before i knew any better

On my first pc back in the day, i didnt know about anti virus. No joke - i surfed the net on dial up for about a year until things started going astray. That was about 10 years ago, maybe the internet wasnt so evil back then?

Now i use a router, Kaspersky, zone and zone defender and its all sweet.

all i can say is

NOD32 ftw or kapersky for VIRUS but now both of them have a fullsuite out that will do virus spyware and firewall. (there are heaps of torrents for cracked versions just pm me)

avg is GOOD, and free,

SPY BOT is the best AND I MEAN THE BEST.

but definately use a router SO much safer than ANY software firewall

apart from that if you use ie THE STOP NOW and download firefox and install noscript, BEST THING EVER, VERY VERY SAFE FOR BROWSING.

and last but not least delete your cookies after looking at porn EVERYTIME.

I use AVG.

However there is a trick.

My computer seemed to have alot of problems for a few years, which meant constant re-formatting, so after i told a guy at a pub my problem he said, that with AVG...you must make it your FIRST priority to install it before anything else.

Apparantly if you install it later say after you have put your backup files on, it doesnt work, it never searches these files for trojans/viruses etc. BUt if it is the first thing on there, then it can find them....

Turned out...id had a disk for several years with a naughty trojan thingy on it....since i followed this step, ive not had any problems....But the constant updates tick me off a little.

My combo would be
NOD32
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware SE Personal
CCleaner
Modified Hosts file from here - http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm (Works great for blocking sites known for having viruses and blocks sites that trojans and stuff comunicate with)
Windows XP SP2 Firewall
Firewall from my router [A little to bloody sensitive at times I find I need to clean the blacklist regularly because it blocks sites for some unknown reason & with the firewall on high you basically have to let everything through manually because it blocks everything except port 80 (HTTP)]

I think that's all I use oh I forgot one very important one COMMON SENSE. An anti-virus or anti-spyware program does not protect you from everything. The best protection of all is a responsible and smart user.

I've always used Zonealarm but the latest version gave me all sorts of trouble so I ditched it. Got Kaspersky suite for cheap and its good, but not free.

Most effective aye???

So you've tested them all out and looked at the ram usage for all programs that are out there?

Now use avast, found it non intrusive & free... personally i feel it is better than zone alarm & AVG which I was using before the leap to Vista home premium...

I just gave avg the boot for NOD32...,avg is freeware for a reason...its simply not that good.

Sybot search and destroy and windows firewall do the rest.

(Nod can be found on an "extended trial " a 16 million day trial...;),its not what you know...its what the people you know,know...:)---thx Ancient...)
