View Full Version : New LCD kill my graphics card?

Thinking of getting an AOC 24" LCD (1920x1200 res). One thing I am wanting to bounce off people is whether it will likely kill my graphics card (GeForce 7950GT 512MB, PCI-E). I currently run on a 19" LCD with 1280x1024 res, high settings and 2x AA.

Have also heard people whinge that 24" is too big for FPS games, but I would have thought that if you have to start using some peripheral vision then getting closer to reality - all good!

Does Battlefield 2 engine cope with this resolution?

BTW - MB is MSI P965 Platinum, CPU is E6300 and have 2GB of GEIL 667 RAM

You won't be running High & 2x AA and maintaining a decent framerate...

So right now you're running at around 40-60FPS I assume? Maybe a little higher due to the lower AA...

The picture looks rather bleak for 1920x1200...

Bleak for you... not for my 8800GT pwnage ;)

The 8800GT is going for just about $200 in perth now fyi... although out of stock everywhere except foxcomp :(

Nah, I get well up around 100 frames at present and no probs with any maps that others complain about.

Hmm. on comparison they say 7950GT at 1280x1024 is 37.1 whereas at 1920x1200 is 23.3, However I am currently getting around 100 frames, so I should expect say 70-80?
Those screens are very useful BTW - Thanks

I might have a look for 8800GT. Damn your price sounds good - where from, I checked a wholesaler and they quoted MSI overclocked version of the card at $255 ex GST. Would I need to go this high though - I don't expect to need higher res for long time after that, so would an 8600GT or 9600GT series card do? Being lazy not looking it up now ;o)
For $200 though it wouldbe hard to not buy it if it's better choice.

Dam $200

I was hoping the price of
EVGA 8800 GT KO 512MB 675/1950MHz - - $455

Would come down so I could SLI for GTA4 in a couple of weeks !

:( Sadly I appear to be working off outdated data... National prices appear to have blipped up again, to ~$225+ in the east and $250+ in WA which sucks for build recommendations as it adds an extra 25%. 9600GT is still @ $200, but I'm not sure if that justifies it.

I know the 9600GT is close to the 8800GT, but it does scale well in SLI. Scales well! Uhhhh, I'd have to look up reviews to figure out if it is justified at the larger resoltions or not, but I'm super busy.

Thanks for you input Pysrus! Think I can get some off monitor if I bundle with a card so might go down that route.. I'll do a bit of a search first.

if you actually do run over what your graphics card can handle in res it will just go like 1 frame a second so don't worry eg of the pc game could Dirt i ran ultra settings at 1680x1050 as i have a 8800gts with only 320 of gpu ram all it did was go like 1 frame so it wont hurt it

Tecguy, I can only get an inkling of what you mean. A bit of post structure and grammar would help, mate!

you could over heat it and kill it that way but thats not due to a high res

Sorry I'm not good at grammar and English

Yeah not actually worried about killing it as such, just whether it would be up to the task.

Sorry to say, no GTA4 on PC. Maybe later, like MUCH later, but only big consoles at the moment.

Well that blows....

Shows how much attention I pay to gaming news....
I thought it would be out this month...

See what the big companies do is release a really really popular game on the consoles, then when the popularity has died down and people have almost forgotten about it suddenly it pops up for PC and all of those who couldn't experience it before now can and the company makes a big huge profit.

I'm looking at you Bungie:furious:

But getting back on topic......8800gt FTW!

GTA4 may not be released on PC due to piracy.
The major hype will be there but people will just download it.
on console it is a lil more difficult and less people will do it.

All the other GTA games have come out on PC after a while, so I see no reason they would not do the same again.

A final resurrection..

Thinking of either
MSI 8800GT 512MB Overclocked Edition for $255 ex, in stock, or
MSI 8800GTS 512MB Overclocked Edition for $355 ex, low stock

Is the GTS worth the extra?

Question to ask yourself:

Is a dual slot cooler worth $100 to you? That's basically the only difference, barring some minor memory bandwidth and clock increases on the GTS, which can easily be achieved through GT overclocks if you need it.

I had the same choice to make and I picked the 8800GT (but I don't bother with factory overclocked stuff) and couldn't be happier. It is significantly louder than the GTS @ full load fan speed, but if you use rivatuner to set the fan speed to never exceed 60%, it is inaudible... the only time it'll annoy you is for 2 seconds during POST when everything goes @ max for a while.

If keeping your components cool & case noise are absolute priorities for you, pick the GTS... if you're leaning towards bang-for-buck, 8800GT all the way!

For a little more clarification, check out the "massive" performance difference between the two:
http://www.tomshardware.com /reviews/geforce-8800-gts-512-mb,1743-8.html

Read that review and it's obvious that the performance difference is negligible, it's all to do with your cooling preferences.

Edit again:
Although according to this chart... there does not appear to be a great deal of audible difference between the two...
