INTRODUCTION

Z Special Unit (ZSU) is a relatively new and progressive Australian ArmA / ArmA 2 clan, formed in November 2008 with around a dozen active members playing a scheduled co-op mission every Thursday evening and ad-hoc games whenever members want to play. What differentiates ZSU from other clans is our gaming style, our facilities and our mission designers. We are always looking for mature, team-oriented people to join us!

ZSU GAMING STYLE

ZSU strives to balance realism and playability, always keeping in mind that we play to have fun! Given the relatively small size of the Australian ArmA community, we aim to minimise barriers to new players by not requiring mandatory training, and allowing newcomers to start playing immediately on an equal footing with existing players under the guidance of our more experienced members. We use a volunteer system for all roles in each mission, finding that players generally choose the right role according to their abilities and experience. We provide honest and constructive feedback after each game to help all players improve their personal, team and leadership performance.

We aim for a relaxed atmosphere. Most of us do not have military backgrounds, and there are no rigid requirements around game and forum attendance. We don’t care if players are members of other clans as long as they adhere to ZSU’s philosophy and enjoy playing as part of a team.

We currently play every Thursday evening, deliberately starting a little later at 8:30pm to accommodate members with work and/or family commitments.

FEATURES AND FACILITIES

ZSU owns a high-end quad-core server which is hosted in a Sydney data centre with a 100Mb connection. Unlike other clans who rent their servers, we can run whatever we want, whenever we want and as many servers as we want, including providing personal test servers to mission designers.

We have a thriving forum (http://www.zspecialunit.org /forums/) and picture gallery (http://www.zspecialunit.org /gallery/), as well as a wiki (http://wiki.zspecialunit.or g/index.php/Main_Page) with information on our server setup to get new players up to speed quickly. All members get issued with a complimentary zspecialunit.org email address for representing ZSU on other sites.

MISSION DESIGN

ZSU prides itself on its in-house written missions created by our 4 (and growing!) mission designers. We strive to play a brand new in-house mission every week – none of the same old Domination/Evolution or publicly-available missions each night. To encourage teamwork and reduce team fragmentation caused by respawning, we use Norrin’s revive script. We use Yoma’s Addon Synchroniser to tightly manage our ZSU mod collection – no searching for mods and wasting time lost in “mod hell”. Mods are decided on collectively to give the best game experience without sacrificing stability.

Our wiki (http://wiki.zspecialunit.or g/index.php/Main_Page) is also used by our mission designers to share their knowledge, techniques and scripts, and we use an ever-maturing ZSU mission template for all missions to provide a stable, consistent multiplayer experience.

With the release of Operation Arrowhead, a timely reminder that Z Special Unit is still active as always, and open to new players, whether you are entirely new to the ARMA series and tactical shooters, or a seasoned veteran.

We are still running regular Black Ops Tuesdays (for ZSU clan members only) as well as our larger Thursday missions, averaging around 12-18 players/mission. These are all strongly teamwork-orientated, with 4-6 man fireteams and a command channel. We've also started hosting a weekly public coop event to get more teamwork and tactical play out there in the public domain.

There are no requirements to play with us aside from TS3 and a microphone, an 18 y.o. age minimum, and you have been through a basic induction (a couple of hours max) with one of the team to get the basics of communications and teamwork happening.

We are a group keen to keep a balance between fun and realism in game. There are no role limitations or requirements to take leadership or specialist roles (e.g. pilots or sniper) in game aside from being mature enough to recognize whether you are competent enough or not in that role if its mission critical.

If interested, drop by our forums http://www.zspecialunit.org / and say hello; there is a stack of information available, and plenty of members happy to answer any questions you have.
