Laptops?

Hey... seeing that there be a TV thread...

I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good gaming laptops around the <1500 mark?

I'm going to buy one in the next few weeks for use at uni but I'd also like one that fuctions as a half decent gaming device.... Any suggestions?

Screen size... not too worried...
Need a moderate sized Hard drive... gonna have a large portable with me anyway.
I'll be running Windows 7..

Re: Laptops?

Well mine isn't exactly a gaming laptop...Its a $700 Toshiba , running vista 32 bit and 2 G of ram with a generic GPU but it will still play PR (with a few tweaks and some hardware acceleration ).

You can get some really good laptops for the $ you are looking at spending, but if its going to be your main PC make sure you get one with a decent size HD and gpu....

Heres a few suggestions http://buy.blorge.com/2008/05/29/fiv...or-under-1500/

Re: Laptops?

Nah Bahlye I'm still gonna keep my Desk top as my power house of games... but a secondary gaming machine that I can save simple files on is more so what I'm looking for.

GT 335M is a fail graphics card.

I couldn't find a laptop within the $1500 range that fit your requirements (maybe my definition of half decent gaming is different from others), but this MSI GX640 looks to be quite decent for the price (~$1900)

From what i've read its not terrible. The screen is small so you don't need a heap of GPU power to get reasonable results. Plus its less than $1500

That is true... 1366x768 isn't a huge resolution, but even so... I think that review is a bit shakey...

Quote:
Armed Assault 2 - I first kicked up ArmA2, with everything maximized and was getting an average of 25 FPS. When I dropped it down to high settings I was at 30, then medium was at 40.
Now it's not a direct comparison, but my i7 @ 3.6ghz, HD5870 & 6GB of ram with everything maxed @ 1680x1050 got an average of 19FPS on the benchmark. That his 1.3ghz with GT335M could achieve 25FPS even at the lower resolution of 1366x768 is quite hard to believe for me... Aside from that though, if you don't mind the 11.6 inch screen, it's a decent unit for the price! Certainly falls way better into the $1500 mark ($1487 when I specced one up on dell.com.au) than my $1888 suggestion ).

Re: Laptops?

I picked up an M11x a few months ago when JB had them on sale - the idea was to use it primarily for uni and, seeing as I have a rather long commute, gaming on the way home.

Once you switch over and engage the gfx card it's a pretty handy little gaming machine. Still trying to get PR sorted on it, but Uni is a priority at the moment.

Re: Laptops?

Could always look at one of the lower end Asus machines at JB's, were checking those out for the wife and you could pick up a decent one around that mark, granted it was a Core2, not a snazzy i series but still if it isnt the main rig then who cares?

Jack (iirc) from LBO is one Whirlpool a fair bit and looks after those on there.
