Attention to all you old school gamers, the new Tribes game is in beta so its time to dust off your skiing boots!


Its pretty darn good from the the rounds I've played, can't wait to unlock the technician (Somebody please protect the radar and stop wasting money on vehicles!). What's your impression? Need beta keys just PM!

Played this for a little bit. Was a huge fan of tribes back in the day.

IMHO, they killed tribes with this.

The jetpack used to be just one of the the backpacks you could select and it had advantages and disadvantages. Now everyone has a jetpack and they are waaaaaay overpowered. No one ever walks everyone is skiing and jetpacking 100% of the time. They are so overpowered that even the epicly fast grav bike I remembered from the old tribes is useless.

On that note the vehicles are useless, they are underpowered deathtraps and no one decent uses them which is a real shame as they used to be great game changers.

Lastly the weapons are retarded. The game always had the "spinfusor" as a prevalent weapon (Shoots explosive discs). However now it is pretty much the only weapon worth using. The sniper rifles do practically no damage even though they are SNIPER RIFLES!!! The rounds from automatic ballistic (bullet) weapons travel really slowly and given how fast everyone is constantly jumping around the map they can out manoeuvre it very easily. In fact the only way that you can really hit anyone in the game is aiming at the ground where you think they are going to land from their incessant jetpack jumps.

CTF is a joke as well because it is soooo hard to hit anything the flags are really easy to steal. I often have 5+ players firing at me constantly and I can just jetpack/ski in at crazy speeds and they have no real chance of hitting me before I am gone with flag in hand back to my base at 10,000 km/h.

As I said I was a massive fan of tribes back in the day. But this version has taken all the teamwork and tactics out of the game and turned it into the spammyest spamfest I have ever played on PC. It makes CoD look like ArmA.

Tank and grav bike are fairly useless, unless you use the bike to deliver 2 heavies into the enemy base quickly (especially on maps like crossfire where it takes them ages to build up momentum even with rocket jumping, and they get mobbed in the field by lights and murdered). The shrike can be a pain unless someone makes it their job to chase it with a rocket launcher all day.

Would have liked to see some more of the old tribes vehicles back, but the maps and flag placements (and defences) aren't really encouraging the vehicles (along with very few people spending their money on them, I reckon vehicles should be a static fleet as opposed to 'buying them').

Spinfusors are good, but you obviously haven't played against anyone who can aim the chaingun on the doombringer (seriously I've seen 3 people on the aus servers who know what they're doing with that thing, and they just mulch the opposing team scoring 50kills upwards, most people are just spraying with it and don't realise it kills a light in 8 bullets, those who control the kick and minimal spray whilst flying decimate things).
It's really the same with all the projectile weapons, they are MUCH harder to use than the projectiles, but things like the falcon pistol are borderline broken (being on a sniper, quick reload, large clip and average damage combined with insane ROF, it rips apart most opposition simply because the sniper can remain in the air and thus avoid the splash damage that most people use, and cause disorientation with the constant damage screen.

The sniper rifles are hitscan..... ONE good sentinel on defense renders pathfinder spams almost completely useless without coordination (like killing him, all going at the same time and chucking the flag around or counter snipers). 2 shots and a light is down (I don't know if headshots do more damage, I don't snipe much, but the league teams usually have one sniper that just watches the whole field). 550 damage a shot on the basic rifle may not kill a heavy or a medium in one hit, but it will piss them off, they can't fight back, and you can continue shooting them unless they stop to take cover (in which case they will either get cleaned up or just be useless with no momentum).
Sniping takes a fair bit of skill with arc prediction, placement and angle coverage, but anyone with decent AWP skills should pick it up easily (I never learnt that style of sniping, so I'm pretty shocking at it). But they are far from useless.

Ascend does have a problem with the imbalance between flag grabbers and chasers, this is more a problem of base defense design (turrets are pretty crap, generators are easily destroyed and only worthwhile too keep forcefields up, mines are too predictable). The last few beta releases/changes I saw were trying to make it easier for defenders to catch up and lessen the power of 250+kph grabs, but they're not quite there (shrikes certainly run down those that go wide with the flag grabs, but most PUB defenses don't watch the Back-Front grab routes, so you can be back at your flag in under 20s).

Snipers and midfield defenders certainly help, but its really down to team coordination (or lack of in pubs, so noone is waiting to get the light speed grabbers, or there aren't a few heavies/soldiers blocking the flag).

I am disappoint.

It is certainly an improvement over most mainstream FPS's out there at the moment, and I'll give it support purely for jumping outside the 'modern/future/ww2' arena and that style of game (along with being pretty bloody good for a FREE game).

But few things live up to the legendary games of old.

So I finally got around to getting this after watching all the Totalbiscuit videos and noticing it appeared on steam. It currently has a double xp event going which is certainly getting me some nice items. There's an oceanic server hub based in Australia, I get 40-50ms. If you have ever played one of the Surf mods on counter strike you will feel instantly familiar with the physics of the game, but you have a bonus jetpack to get around.

I've just started getting back into it (yay steam), and the new maps are certainly making ctf ALOT closer (most games are ending 4-5, although some of that has to do with the base level of skill having increased since beta).
