Re: SOS Tech Heads
Looks like corrupted memory probably from a dry solder joint.
Read this http://www.dansdata.com/io130.htm Then either try fixing yours or go buy another. Check your warranty period first though. ![]() |

Had a quick look at this, and i believe it to be codwallop. first up, solder generally when it is melted for the second time is much less graded than before, as you can see when you use it. Even if it does work, the statement about a guy having to redo it six months later would definitely be the case, or probably more often/ Secondly, I highly doubt corrupted memory, as if any of the memory was corrupted then it would crash out the rest. 1 bad bit 'can' completely destroy all memory in the machine if it manages to spread. In a single area though, most systems will automatically detect bad memory and automatically either shut down ( you will in most cases hear the cursed double beeps) or stop that memory. I have had many cases where a video card with memory goes and ends up taking both the two sticks with it.... it sucks... well..... any critics take a look because my pc hardware knowledge is a bit rusty and its been awhile since i had to fix a machine ![]() |

Re: SOS Tech Heads
now for the science experiment - go and bake your old card - i give 10:1 odds it will work if done correctly

Re: SOS Tech Heads
greaseproof paper (foil can also be used) and a nice metal tray - take all the plastics and bits off the card that you can (common sense stuff - like fans and extra bits that don't need to be there - anything you can unscrew or unclip) be sure to wash the tray and wipe the oven out after as solder/lead is poisonous (there's no mess - just a little smell) make 4 little balls of foil about the size of those big marballs/20c piece (one for each corner of the card) - i use some little metal stands i made with baker-lite sleeves, but the balls work perfectly (thats what she said..) preheat over to 200c - 210 for older ovens place the balls on the baking tray and the stripped card upside down onto the balls - making sure the balls don't touch any components or joints on each corner put into the oven for 20 minutes on the middle shelf - 15 if you are scared :p let cool for a 60 mins or so - put it back together - slot it in and test I've done heaps of items this same way for many years - most work on the first hit, if you are worried or unsure - drop the oven heat a bit and put them in for shorter periods but I've found 200c for 20 is perfect. my dad used to put old radio (amateur/ham) valves into a pottery kiln years ago to do something similar. like i said - i had one of my previous SLI setups sitting around for 18 months - when i slotted them into my wife's machine both cards had the same artifacts as yours - i put them in together and 1 came out perfect the second needed another hit, both cards are in her machine that runs all day every day and get flogged on Diablo3. i've used this method on tv pcbs, monitors, laptop boards, mother boards, some digimon thing my daughter has, ps3's and 2's, vid cards, a stallion board, a DSLAM 128 modem card (16k it cost - was a big test) lots of things i cant think of, but be aware anything bigger than a vid card needs support in the middle or the pcb will sag when heated. the science behind it is basically what tech's call dry solder joints or micro fissures in the solder - heating it to the right temp for a period of time softens the solder to the point where it refills the little joints and fissures. its quicker/easier/safer than getting a fine point iron and doing over each little solder joint hoping to find the right one. friends bring their dead crap to me all the time to look at because of my kitchen skills (and my background) - be aware, if you do it right, they'll annoy the shiit out of you too.. ![]() My machine is running slow when playing Arma 3 (no matter the settings), not sure if its Arma 3 after the update or my machine. Lol I would take a stab and say its my machine for sure! It all started after a render, through a bat file with a windows shutdown command - and the next morning the machine just wouldnt turn on. I ended up having to jump start the pc by pressing the power button (nothing happens), then pulling out the power cord, and plugging it back in - bam, turns on.... Everything seems normal, other applications, startup etc appear/run normal...... However, when having a look at cpuz and asus ai suite i notice that the ram 'Max Bandwidth' is 800mhz...... is this right for this ram In the bios I have the ram speed set to 1866, not 2133mhz I feel like I have a bad ram stick, but just not sure..... just havent had time to run that diag.. Also the ram sits under the cpu cooler/fans so testing each ram stick is also on the list, but will take a while to do.....ugh! any help would be great chaps! ran memtest86+ - no errors
ran afaik an gpu test with occt - no errors (will dive deeper tomorrow) cpuid is reporting my cpu speed as if its only a single core? bad report? reinstalling arma 2 to see the performance.... ![]() EDIT: re installed A2, running at maxed out settings and getting 40-70 fps...... must be A3..... thanks fellas! ![]() Last edited by 3D_Gimp : 10th April 2013 at 11:01 PM. |
