^^^ This is rapidly becoming a novel in itself! Alliances, flashbacks, intrigue, good vs. evil (Aux), just not enough sex IMO. |

Re: What are you reading?
"What Doesn't Kill You" Iris Johansen.
Pathetic. If I had a dollar for the number of times the main character said something "jerkily", I'd be rich. Credibility - nil. Can anyone imagine convoluted dialogue when you're trying to carry out a hot rescue with a helicopter? On a better (perhaps not brighter) note, thanks to this thread, I read "Matterhorn" - Carl Marlantez which is a gritty, painful, stressful, sad, black must-read. Credibility - 100%. Thanks Aus-Lorrie. Juggernaut - Adam Baker - I'm just finishing this. A handful of mercenarys chasing gold end up dealing with an unworldly biologic"""al weapon and its "zombielike" victims. It's a fast sweaty read that's a bit scary - good "boys fodder" book. Next is "Pirate" Duncan Falconer. So far, so good - about 14 pages in... Re: What are you reading?
Aus-Lorrie's recommendation of Matterhorn led me to go looking for anything else by this courageous, excruciatingly honest author.
I found "What it's Like to go to War". It's an important book I reckon, with advice for non-warriors as well as warriors - about the ways character is built, and about how we can and should strive to be better people. |

Re: What are you reading?
Picked up a book yesterday for $5.
The Ballad of Trench Mouth Taggart, by M Glenn Taylor. Looks like it'll be a bit of fun. Haven't started reading it, but it's a sort of western billy the kid kinda thing I'm pretty sure. Might try and get into the city and visit that really big 2nd hand bookshop tomorrow. There's a couple of good reference books I want to pick up for next year.

Re: What are you reading?
For the Sci-Fi fans out there, I'm reading Larry Nivan's fourth novel in the "Ringworld" series, It's a nice blend of adventure and Sci-Fi. For those of you that play Halo, Ringworld might seem a little familiar n some places but considering that it was written in 1970, Halo clearly borrowed more than a few ideas.

Re: What are you reading?
Have to say, I've only read a couple of books at best that have been as emotionally stimulating as 'The Ballard of Trench Mouth Taggart'.
A wee bit of a confusing ending, but one the whole a very well written book. Hard to believe it's fiction, it's written with such detail. M Glenn Taylor has published a second novel, and I'm keen to give it a read. 4.5/5 would recommend this book. (I'm also looking for a story about crocodiles and the NT from earlier this year, it should be somewhere in this house...)

Re: What are you reading?
![]() I've had this copy of the book for almost 30 years... as indicated by the gaffer tape book binding. I skim it from time to time.

Re: What are you reading?
"On the Road" - Jack Kerouac.
Supposed to be a classic - defining the Beat era, etc. Clever writing style that drew me into the frantic (bi-polar) world they lived in - drugged up and speeding. By the end of the book I was relieved to be over the repetition of new places, shallow relationships, raving, blah blah. Considering these guys were supposed to be having a ball - doing exactly what they wanted - travelling, drinking, stoning, the word SAD was repeated too often. Only read it if you want to get into the heads of tearaways of the era - a taste of where jazz really took off. |

Re: What are you reading?
Have since finished 'Dead Men Risen'. If you fancy yourself a bit of a historian, want to know what it's actually like out in Afghanistan or a just generally interested in the Military/Welsh Guards then this book is for you.
Parts that are actually down right emotional, after reading the likes of Ed Macy and other books from Afghanistan, this paints a completely different picture. Well worth a read - 10/10 for me.

Re: What are you reading?
"The Art Of War", by Sun Tzu.
Quite frankly, a lot of the things he talks about are still relevant if you apply them to modern warfare, like his theory on attacking and defending ratios. I actually use his advice a lot when I squad lead in PR. |
