In all honesty, if we had to cut something down I'd probably flag the MBT's. The Leo's were never deployed, there hasn't really been a conflict we've been involved in for 20 years that required them (Although ET was close) & any sort of a conflict we're likely to be involved in anytime soon (SE Asia & the Pacific) really wouldn't require them. There's also the terrain in SE Asia & the Pacific, not entirely suited to MBT's, look at Indonesia's issues with them. They're also an OTS asset that we would be able to quire in great quantities very quickly if required. But on the other hand, we structured the other services (RAN & RAAF) to be able to move them (C-17, LHD's, LCM1E), yet we reduce them. In regards to the SPA, Labour government for you... . |

Re the SPA tho, I think both sides of Gov't need to take the blame for this one. Libs for dithering so long on it (plus knocking back the Dutch offer of swapping the Pzh2000 for Bushmasters) and Labour for killing it outright...

I understand why this is a widely held belief but speak to anyone who served in Vietnam where tanks were supposedly an anachronism and they will tell you that the Centurions saved hundreds of Aussie lives. One of the interesting things to come out of almost every major conflict Australia has ever been involved in is that: 1) Armour saves lives 2) You can never have too many grenades - the moron's who insist that grenades be banned under initial ROE's are inevitably proven wrong; and 3) Mortars are an infantryman's best friend.

Re: Military thread
Thing about tanks is it only takes a couple of months to get some out of an allies war stores and de-mothball them in a pinch and delivered to wherever we need them.
It takes years to train drivers and gunners and years more to train vehicle commanders. It takes decades to build trainers to train these crewmen. Allies will lendlease surplus vehicles but they aint going to lend us crew. The current abrams are unlikely to ever leave aus but the crews trained on them are able to jump in pretty much any abram with minimal retraining and be operational wherever we have our borrowed tanks delivered . Most people understand a fighter pilot is worth more than the plane in $ and training time. Well a tank crew is the same. ![]() |

Re: Military thread
The danes and canadians have been using their Leo2's for awhile over in afghanistan. with pretty good results. they place em up on a vantage point over looking the area where a patrol is to take place, awesome firesupport and a big moral killer to the insurgents, i mean who wants to get into a fight when you know there are two 120mm boom sticks waiting to end you and you have nothing to touch em with.

Man that's awesome. I'm still getting over the fact that there's a **** made to carry other ships around.

Re: Military thread
Technically if they really wanted to, the Blue Marlin could carry both HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide at the same time.

they'd have to stack 'em high to do that, which would do some seriously rude things to the CoG of the Marvin. Is an amazing vessel though, like the Airbus 'Super Guppy' or the Boeing equivalent
