Re: Who's Looking For Work ?
yeah the mining game is a hard 1 to get into but once the foot is in the door, the sky is the limit. im a jumbo operator, and have been mining for 11 years, not the best job in the world but 130k and a rotating 5 on 5 off roster is a pretty good lifestyle.if you have a trade you are highly favored to get a job if you annoy the right people for long enough.if you cant seem to break into mining, try the remote areas of aus where it is hot and horrible, alot of people cant hack IT out there for 2 or 3 weeks strait.....(THATS WHERE YOU GET YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR AND EARN DECENT MONEY DOING SO).

Re: Who's Looking For Work ?
I am.
Finished HSC last year, ended up with Certificate III in Live Production, Theatre and Events (Technical Operations), which got me a job offer from a motivational media company, travel to schools, three big screens/projectors etc (portable cinema). Sounds fun, not really after awhile. Now looking for Electrical/Auto Electrical apprenticeship in the mines. Missed 2012 January intake but have applied for some mid 2012 ones (BMA, Newcrest, Gold fields), they just closed. Even applied for a traineeship in a completely unrelated field to as many of you say, get my foot in the door, will see how it turns out ![]() Last edited by Santa : 25th March 2012 at 09:44 AM. |

Re: Who's Looking For Work ?
Two questions BigD'ers.
1) Where would be the best place to get a white card in Brisbane? I'm currently doing casual labour hire from a place called 'Labour Solutions Australia', working mainly for Grace as a removalist. Good pay, but not as much work as hoped. The guy I report to at LSA suggested I get a white card so I can be eligible for more labour work. 2) Also looking for some vacation work out in the mines. Preferably around Mackay/Bowen basin (as it's close to home). Don't care if I work as a cleaner or a cook or anything, just something to bring in some dough and (hopefully) give me a better opportunity when I'm finished uni [ie. already have experience out at the mines vs graduate with no experience out there]. Does anyone know any good companies or how I'd get into it? Cheers ![]()

Re: Who's Looking For Work ?
Hahaha cheers for the reply Bahlye.
It's not so much knowing people to get hours I don't think - the guys at LSA that I talk to (one of them is a relative) are pretty sweet. I got a call yesterday, but I couldn't take it because I don't have personal transport and the LSA guy knew but forgot to mention it. He said he'd put me at the top of the list for more work though. I think the only way I can get more work than now is if I actually go straight to Grace and work for them - which would be full time and clash with uni... But yeah thanks for the reply B, I wasn't sure which of those sites was reputable. I'll wait for Nufty to reply and see what the deal is. Cheers ![]()

Re: Who's Looking For Work ?
It's a funny situation at the moment here (Rocky is where I'm based). With the Aussie dollar staying high and coal prices steadily dropping they don't seem to be hiring a lot of people. We're I'm at we are supposed to have 4 crews of 8 rotating shifts supported by 2 crews of 4 on permanent days. Currently we have 2 crews of 6, 1 of five, 1 of 4 and 2 of 3. Our trucks are 6 months out from a 3 year lifespan, which is usually when major component failures occur and normally crews are beefed up to compensate with the extra workload (out of 24 trucks when I left yesterday we had 3 down with engines, 2 for trannys, 1 for a final drive and 2 for services + 3 more with engines being monitored for failures, 2 more trannys and a diff.
The company that runs the mine is in exactly the same position. In theory it can't last much longer, they are going to need to start employing soon as people don't stay in a job they have to do the work of 3. Some good vac work though would be washing down machines before maintenance (cruisy little number) or just laboring in the wash plant. They always seem to be employing new people for these roles as no-one lasts. Pays well and our last 2 washpad people have now got apprenticeships. I don't know too much about the wash plant as I've never really had anything to do with it. I'm pretty sure they use labor hire companies for laborers but each mine is different. Even Hastings in Mackay might be worth a shot. It's not going to pay as well as the mines but its better than a tradie in a small workshop and its a foot in the door for later on. Any questions, just ask.

Re: Who's Looking For Work ?
Awesome thanks Nufty mate. Interesting times indeed...
That washdown job sounds great. That's pretty much exactly what I was after - I know it's not the same - but I used to wash down the dozer at the farm before we did maintenance on it (repainted some panels in red so we had this sweet multi coloured dozer haha). My contact at LSA might have some contacts at the mines - I've noticed they have some ads for various mining roles. For that would you live on site for a couple of days? Or driver there and back each day?

Re: Who's Looking For Work ?
Generally you would follow a crew so you would be on roster (4 and 4, 7 and 7, lifestyle or pajama). If you live close enough (can't be more than 14 hours from start to finish) you can travel each day or stay in a camp. The thing to watch for is that the company you work for, contractor or mine, will supply accommodation. Anglo as a rule charge employees $90p/w to stay in camps (and their camp is ****e).

Re: Who's Looking For Work ?
Anyone know anything about crane operating? Is there any type of apprentiship situations in that line of work? Or just courses? Wouldn't mind a job as a crane operator.
