I remember a big fire in the dozer one day. Grandad hadn't fully tightened one of the clips on the terminal, and there was just enough of a gap to make a spark. Pretty new battery, he tried to start it for a bit but it just kept whirring. Next thing, there was a heap of smoke pouring from the battery compartment, so we opened up and there was all these flames jumping out at us.
Luckily we had a fire extinguisher bolted on right next to it, so we put it out. Then a little later, we got a diesel fitter out who fixed the wiring and also bolted in a kill switch so it doesn't drain the battery when the machine isn't on.

Coulda been a lot worse, the battery compartment is right next door to the hydraulic fluid reservoir and also pretty close to the diesel tank as well as being basically underneath the cockpit...

We actually still have the battery, the terminal that did it has been partially melted off so it's no use in a vehicle, but it's still good for the pump we use for spraying lantana.

and are you sure you're from Australia? it doesnt really seem like you are, it is most certainly not illegal to disturb animals in their natural environment, you're even allowed to shoot them (a select few), not to mention in Australia people wouldnt usually take something like my previous comment as an insult or at least take it with a grain of salt, i'll re word my previous statement, i dont mind if i insult, i just dont mean to cause offense, if you understand the difference.
