You can yell "RECRUIT - DO THE WASHING UP" and I will instinctively do it after a few weeks of conditioning lol

lawls! It's cute that you think they'll let you off base ![]() You'll be lucky if you get 2 days off base - one 3 hour day to buy supplies and one half day rec leave. Just gotta make sure you jam as much PR into those 3 hours as possible ![]()

Pay attention to Bammo's advice. He mentioned use of a yagi antenna - this is a directional antenna (which is different to what you'd put on a car) and will provide a significant increase in signal strength. There might be some issue with VERY long distance transmission due timing issues with the protocols but a yagi, on a high pole or tower if necessary, is definitely worth a try. Satellite will not work for gaming - the latency is way too high.

Re: Satellite Broadband connection
Well it is official there is no ADSL connection at the new house and the Wireless system does not work as Telstra tower is out of range and Optus tower has a hill between me and it I discussed the antenna idea with a tech today and he said if that was a option I would not qualify for the government installation. As they prefer people to use the wireless network.
So Satellite it will be at least it gets me 2mb to 4mb speed.

Re: Satellite Broadband connection
Huh? You have already determined that you can get a bit of Next G Signal with a Bi-Directional Antenna. If you use a Directional Antenna than you will definitely get a little bit of gain if not a decent amount which might make it workable. Its worth a try if it means you can have a connection that can be used for more than just email and delayed browsing.

Re: Satellite Broadband connection
I very much doubt the Government has any idea whether you can get wireless coverage! But if you're happy to settle for the latency of satellite without trying anything else I'm not going to spend time trying to convince you to do otherwise.

It wasn't the government I was speaking with it was a guy that installs antennas and the like for a living. We sat down with some maps I pointed out where I was moving to and he began measuring stuff up. After 30 minutes of discussion he told me that he doubted a antenna would make much of a difference as Mangoplah is a know black spot for Telstra and they where not looking to fix this problem. I could spend 200 to 300 dollars just for it and end up with no better connection. As there is no guarantee it will work. I have also spoken to a number of clients in that area 2 of them attempted the wireless path and spent 500 to attempt it and had no luck and ended up back on the satellite connection. So the problem is I could end up out of pocket plus signed up for wireless internet with no connection. So at this point I think I am better off to get the satellite and not spend a lot of cash on something that may work. I have gone done the may work path to many times to be out of pocket.

Re: Satellite Broadband connection
Since this thread is now 3 years old, I'll ask the question; Has satellite internet improved any of the last few years?
I have recently moved and am now situated 5klms from the nearest exchange. The only net I can get here is adsl1 and expected speed is less than 1mb/s for $100p/m on a 60g plan. There is not a hope in hell while my ass points to the ground I'm paying top dollar for outdated services. I looked into wireless again but I have gotten used to using internet radio now and the ridiculous cost of wireless connections/small data packs puts me off - $60p/m for 8g is kind of excessive. This is why I am looking into satellite. The dish and everything is already installed from the last owners so if the connections are a little more stable now, this might be a viable option. If anyone can shed some light on the use of satellite net and any companies worth looking into, it would be much appreciated. Cheers.

Re: Satellite Broadband connection
I would go back to wireless before I went to satellite again. The reason I went to Sat was no other opitions at that point.

Re: Satellite Broadband connection
It's not that satellite hasn't improved - its that the round trip for the data has a hard physical limitation imposed by the sheer distance the signal has to travel (speed of light isn't that fast it turns out!). So no matter how clever the satellite system, you're never going to get a ping under about 500ms.
Only solution is to use very low altitude sub-orbital birds but they cost a mint and only last a few weeks at a time...
