Who would have ever guessed that video games could inflict the same emotional attachment that a novel or cinema can.

Spot on with the emotional engaugement of gaming !
when there was a big hoo har about an R rating for games in Aus some of the censorship nazis refed a couple of studies that monitored the participants emotional n physical responses during game play n movie viewing n gave them a questionare to fill out later to evaluate their interpretation of their experience.
The general jist was yes gaming is more immersive, empathy, emotional n physical responses were higher for gaming than films. One conclusion drawn was that controlling the avatar in a virtual field was a closer attatchment than most directors could hope to achieve through following a protagonist.
the rating nazis waved this as confirmation that an R rating was a bad idea cos some loose nut might take their experience n try n replicate it in the real world. The first prob i see in this conclusion is that loose nuts generally have a much lower empathy for others than the general population. Flaws can be found in this as well, but rar rar... certainly agree gaming can be immersive.
I remember the first time i went to a LAN cafe n played 1942 for 4 or 5 hours straight. Went home fully loaded, closed my eyes for sleepy time n couldnt stop the gaming replays from unfolding behind my eyes

Re: Halo 4 and beyond...

So how long till it comes out?

And that looks pretty darn amazing. Ill be getting it (not at the B$%&*$% price of $110) even if the fact that its the first of a trilogy when halo 3 was meant to be the last of a trilogy. Doesnt sound promising but meh its halo, guns, aliens, co op and pretty ships.

I'm intrigued as to why the elites openly attacked us.

And my money is on forerunner but it'll be somewhat complicated.

Yeah, the war ended, but who knows its a new place probably on the terms of "conquer this planet before the humans can" so its free game to kill eachother maybe?

Well, seeing as there were Grunts, Jackals and Elites in one group, my guess is that they were still loyal to the covenant. I'm sure there would be rag tag bands of them still left in space either living on the covenant or haven't recieved word that the war had ended yet

Some of the latest novels (I think) have described the truce breaking down, as neither side ever really trusted each other. The Elites entered a stage of confusion (civil conflicts) in the wake of the war, and Humanity fed this to make them weaker.

Re: Halo 4 and beyond...

I paused the HD version of the video on them cause I thought something was amiss, and it certainly is!

1. Look at the elites right arm, there is missing armour.
2. The Grunts arent using facemasks with their tanks, also they seem outdated.
3. The jackal's shield is the Halo:CE variant.

Taking that into account, it seems they are either defects or they have been crashed there for a long time (hence the deteriorating/old armour and apparatuses).

Have 3 Halo novels I have been putting off reading sitting next to me, in two weeks when Uni is on break, I will finally have the 2~3 days I need to read them!

Re: Halo 4 and beyond...

I hope the Arbiter makes an appearance. I think the current storyline is that there are multiple Elite factions fighting each other, so its still a possibility that old mate Arby could still be on your team!

Re: Halo 4 and beyond...

The story is chief finds him self on a forerunner planet (pretty sure) Some giant glowing ball comes flying down so lets go investigate and he kills all the forerunners on the way then the covenant come and i am anticipating some sort of dramatic run in with the arbiter sort of like a standoff they become friends win and happy ending... What i left out is the part where they flesh out master chiefs character tapping into his emotional side a long with a crazy cortana who is past her expiry date which will always make things interesting... All in all I'm looking forward to a new story focused halo cause even the run and gun halos before 4 had me emotionally attached to chief which no other game has ever done for me with the exception of Medal of Honor 2010.

Re: Halo 4 and beyond...

So I just finished Halo 4. What a roller coaster. It does feel different, only because I realized that all the previous Halo's stories should have been told how Halo 4 did it.

Emotionally, it was there for me, but unless you have played all the other halo games a doubt that it would be as resonant. Honestly, having not played too many story focused video games, bear with me when I say Halo 4 was the best video game story wise that I have played. Ever. Of All Time

Must have IMO. Best looking game on the Xbox 360 to date, and one of the greatest stories too.
