New South Welsh Right to Silence

Okay, I know that this is shaky ground here as per forum rules, so please don't discuss the politics behind it as this is probably not the place. Such discussion will lead me to asking for the thread to be locked, and the worms to be placed back in the can before it is welded shut. This is simply here to share an online petition and inform you guys about these changes.

That risk noted, I think this issue if far too important to let slide under the radar. The 'honourable' Premier of NSW, Barry O'Farrell, has decided that the right to silence is no longer relevant for New South Welsh citizens to posses as a basic human right. Under his proposed changes, remaining silent upon your arrest will allow the prosecution to make adverse implications and arguments based upon the fact that you did not provide the police with a full explanation of your defence, regardless of whether or not you have obtained legal advice or have a lawyer present.
Nobody can know whether or not at some point in the future they will be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and being asked to adress evidence that will be presented against you in court at a later time, without being able to actually know what evidence is, could possibly make the difference between reasonable doubt of your suspected offence, and a conviction.

I would implore you to write to your state MP in protest of these changes.

Re: New South Welsh Right to Silence

No political or religious discussions - these threads/posts will be locked and deleted on sight. Both subjects are far too sensitive to be entered into here. There are plenty of other forums out there dedicated to these sorts of discussions.

Not shaky. Just not allowed. In other news the political discussion thread has reopened at reality mod forums.
