Squad Leader - OFP vs ARMA

I was chatting with Capt Wolf about using Officer commands to assign targets to squad members and other stuff.

I used to love doing this in OFP SP with AI squad members. I'm just wondering, how much difference is there squad leading in ARMA compared to OFP?

I think I'll give it a go on the public server in the next couple of weeks and find out if OFP experience counts towards anything.

Not much really, few commands that are useless have either been merged or taken out, but that's about it. Team AI is definitely more responsive then OFP AI, and a little smarter too.

Re: Squad Leader - OFP vs ARMA

Regarding AI it is pretty much the same deal as before.

Regarding humans, In ArmA usually you just have a bunch of guys who join in random slots and this leads to some pretty hit and miss teamwork IMHO.

What we need to do is have a nominated SL or two for ArmA games and split into a few proper squads and keep these squads for the duration of the game that way we can get some proper teamwork going more regularly. Instead of the usual "where is everone?", "where are we going?", "what are we doing?"

To this end we are getting some TS sub channels set up so we can set up proper squad comms for future nights, and we should be able to have whispers set up so SLs can communicate with other SLs.

I think it's an overhang from when ingame VOIP on arma had serious issues (I.E crash the whole game and server) but it's completely fixed now and quite impressive. The direct voice is quite amazing, it's just like talking, so let's say you have 2nd squad about 25 meters over or something you can scream out to them so they hear you, or if someone is really close you can just whisper to them, which is great for a realism perspective (example: you're trying to sneak through enemy area, so if you talk too loud, they will hear you.) If you wanted to speak to the entire team say, you could switch channels to team channel.

Re: Squad Leader - OFP vs ARMA

Yes the in game VOIP is quite exceptional especially with regards to the different channels (All, side, squad, vehicle, direct). Only problem is sometimes people can have problems with VOIP playing up which I think is usually related to server load where the transmission cuts in and out, but generally it is pretty good.

Most of us use ingame VOIP and TS depending on who we need to talk to. But as Ice said TS seems to be the preferred method probably just as a result of it being used for so many other games communication needs and some of us are used to using it from before ArmA had VOIP enabled/working properly.

Re: Squad Leader - OFP vs ARMA

It use to be so bad It wasnt used at all, latest patch fixed it and its now usable but it creates a little trouble for the server when its used alot it can lag/desync the sever, its cleaner and clearer to use TS its also direct without the game so if server crashes or in game problems prevent you from telling everyone else whats going on you can easily inform them with TS since its not tied to the game.

I see where you guys are coming from, but I have to say so many people on lately, its impossible to communicate with anyone.

I guess the squad channels might over come that.

No wonder why you quite ones never speak up.. lol When you have something to say go in loud and clear and say it all out at once, everyone else will listen

But yes when theres more then 10 there needs to be split TS channels which should be up soon.. Hopefully.

Re: Squad Leader - OFP vs ARMA

Lol I wanna do a WW2 mod, and have it so only the radio operator can use team channel, everyone else has to use direct channel/VOIP.

Then again shouting out orders would probably make my neighbours think something is up.
