iPhone

Okay since i have one now and i'm sure there are a few of you that have them as well, thought it would be a good idea to have a thread running where we can post info on good apps, tricks and all things we do with them.

Jailbreaking
Couple of resource sites for those interested in Jailbreaking theirs (plan to do it tomorrow once i've backed up all my apps etc)

http://blackra1n.com/ - where you can get it from (Win or Mac logo at the bottom dl's it)

also - http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

Guides:
http://www.quickpwn.com/2009/10/jail...one-3-1-2.html
Windows - http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=5886
Mac - http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=5885

Apps
So far i've only downloaded mostly freebees and a couple of paid ones
http://www.zinger-soft.com/iSSH_features.html
Quote:
Comprehensive VT100, VT102, VT220, ANSI, xterm, and xterm-color terminal emulator over SSH and telnet, integrated with a tunneled X server and VNC client.
Quote:
iSSH is the only SSH client in the App Store that supports tunneled VNC and X client connections as well as iPhone 3.0 cut and paste support!

also

Rep for you good sir... That is as soon as it gets over the last time I rep'd ya, If you did'nt post so much good stuff this wouldn't be a prob, I'm therefore holding you personally responsible for this little conundrum.

But seriously I've been meaning to Jail break my iphone for yonks now, just haven't gotten round to it. Everyone I've talked to about it reckon it makes the phone 1000x better.

Couple of Cool Apps/games: Doodle Jump (simple but addictive), eBuddy (lets you use all popular IM's on ya phone), Google Earth, Shazam (Listens to a song you hear and gives you info on it) and eBay.

Yeah same here, allows you more control over your phone which is always nice.

Apps
Facebook, Skype, eBay & Shazam are all on there as well as Planet 3 (o:

Couple of others i've downloaded to try out are

PocketCAS Lite - nifty little graphical calc package with a great tutorial showing you how to get the best out of it

Logos - VERY neat program for those of us wanting to have a bible package handy (also have tried OliveTree BR Free which is also good and PocketBible but they dont have the translation i like)

WorldWar - very addictive game, similar vein to MWs in FB, only downside is later on you need to add ppl to your "alliance" to do missions. Also have MWs for iPhone but it doesn't seem to sync with MWs in FB which sucks

I quite like the Stocks app that comes standard, its just a pitty that it only links in with the US Exchange as my dad handles all my stocks for me and would be very handy to know how they are going . . .

Oh and the rep thing, i find i have that same issue too (o;

mmm possible, if so i'll remove the links in the OP. Altho i do remember Sony trying to have mods banned in Australia years ago for similar reasons (altho it might've been for straight piracy reasons, cant recall exactly) only to be told by the Judge "erm no, go away". BUT i'll do whatever the Admins want in this case (o:

Quote:
"reverse engineering is a fair use when done for purposes of fostering interoperability with independently created software," saying that yes, even though jailbreakers are using Apple's copyrighted code, they are doing so in a way that allows them functionality that Apple doesn't provide access to on their own.

Quote:
At this point, of course, this is just a complaint in the copyright office, and Apple hasn't made any legal moves yet against anyone responsible for jailbreaking. As the EFF states, it would be extremely hard for them to go after individual jailbreakers -- if you buy an iPhone, it should be your right to "get under the hood," as they say, and do what you want.

Quote:
If this sounds like FUD, that's because it is. One need only transpose Apple's arguments to the world of automobiles to recognize their absurdity. Sure, GM might tell us that, for our own safety, all servicing should be done by an authorized GM dealer using only genuine GM parts. Toyota might say that swapping your engine could reduce the reliability of your car. And Mazda could say that those who throw a supercharger on their Miatas frequently exceed the legal speed limit.

Quote:
Of course, many iPhone owners will be happy to choose solely from the applications that Apple is willing to approve, just like many Ford owners are happy relying exclusively on their local Ford dealer. But if you want to pop the hood, the DMCA surely shouldn't stand in your way.

Now, lets please not get sidetracked with needless debate about the legalities of Jail breaking iPhones as even the above links dont say it is illegal. Stay on topic as I'm sure other iPhone users on these forums will be just as interested as me to read this thread and get more info from it.

That quickPWN guide states you can jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 but you can't "unlock it", whats the difference? and how do you tell what version you have?

No, It's not on you're say so, I merely just quoted the above links that you posted, they basically all stated that the manufacturers statement doesn't have a legal leg to stand on...

The quotes you posted above don't say that at all this one especially just basically says that they can't be bothered, doesn't say anywhere in it at all that they can't sue you or whatever for it.

If they did want you to do it why would they try this?

Re: iPhone

Santa, did you have all those articles bookmarked or something??

I've JB'd my iPhone with blackra1n, very simple and it's awesome how much I can customise it to my liking now. I use Cydia and Installous for everything now.

Fav app at the moment is Cyclemeter (GPS tracks my cycling with graphs and maps). Also smashing Words With Friends with the missus on her iPhone - means we have never ending games of scrabble going on (if you're into that sort of thing!)

Backgrounder is a handy app, allows you to minimise other apps and multitask. Useful if you're gaming or datalogging etc.

There's also some good wireless remote control apps out there, I can effectively run my entire PC from the loungeroom which is handy as I use my TV for a monitor.

Re: iPhone

I don't quite see how quoting the exact extract that I quoted three posts up proves that point, but it is obviously a very grey area. But there is a significant difference between 'illegal' and "the right to sue".

In terms of "post-ability" on these boards I think the topic falls into the category of "insignificant". Please back on topic, or start a new thread and go nuts.

Now that app sounds pretty sweet, is it this one? - http://www.abvio.com/cyclemeter/

Do you use it for riding trails (if MTB) or mainly street?

Re: iPhone

It isn't a grey area at all Apple have said that it is illegal and obviously would be willing to take the people that JailBreak the phones to court, but there are simply too many of them, hence why they are trying to solve the problem by just bringing out a new phone that hopefully will stop that.

And no brodes, Google

Okay Santa and Frenzal, enough please. Keep it on topic as i want this to be a helpful source, NOT a "did not" "did too!" type thread.

Santa, if the forum admins say to to get rid of the jailbreak links i will, no probs.

From what i've read most seem to say Cydia is the better one to use. Believe Snow just unlocks your phone from a carrier (possibly only works in the US?) but i can get my unlock code from 3 easy enough (o:

Re: iPhone

Can you explain that mate. Whats the difference between Jailbreaking and "unlocking".
Is unlocking just, taking you're phone off which ever provider you're plan is with? Ie A iphone with Telstra is locked to telstra and "unlocking" it just makes it available to any provider? We on the same page here?

Re: iPhone

Yeah thats about it, my iPhone is locked onto Three/Hutchison-Vodaphone but i can get an unlock code from them to allow me to use it on other providers if i wish (still have my contract with them tho). From what i've read, Snow unlocks the iPhone from AT&T's network so you can use it on others, whether it works in Aus i dont know.

Jailbreaking 'unlocks' the iPhones OS so you have more control over the iPhone itself eg what apps you want to install, not just what Apple have approved etc.

Just found a bf2 app - allows you to find stats and save players its called bf2viewer

Also there is some good apps for game guides Eg: MW2 you can see pictures of all the titles ETC.. most of these apps r free but randoms are like a buck or 2

to find them just type guide is the app store search

Remote - NOW this is 1 of my fav apps ( need a wireless network ) you can control your music and videos that are playing on the computer through itunes useing your iphone ( not sure if its on the ipod ) i find this helpful when i am laying a number 2 and i wanna listen 2 music thats on my computer in the next room =P.
